Challenges in Sustainable Tourism Development in Himachal Pradesh: Examining Social, Cultural, and Environmental Dimensions
Ishan Bakshi, Aashish Samuel, Bharat KapoorThis study explored the complex challenges affecting sustainable tourism development in Himachal Pradesh, focusing on the social, cultural, and environmental dimensions. A quantitative research approach was adopted, with data collected from local residents living in prominent tourist destinations. A structured questionnaire, available in both English and Hindi, was used to gather responses on a 5-point Likert scale. The reliability of the dataset was verified using standard validation techniques. Multiple regression analysis was applied to test three null hypotheses, each addressing the relationship between one of the three dimensions and sustainable tourism development. The findings demonstrated that social, cultural, and environmental challenges all had a significant impact on sustainable tourism development in the region. Among the key issues identified were the lack of eco-friendly practices, inadequate waste management, the commercialisation of cultural experiences, limited local benefit from tourism, and the strain on infrastructure due to seasonal fluctuations. While each dimension influenced tourism sustainability, the analysis revealed that environmental concerns were particularly influential, followed closely by cultural and social factors. The study concluded that sustainable tourism cannot be achieved through environmental strategies alone. Based on these findings, recommendations were made for policymakers, tourism planners, and private stakeholders to engage local communities, implement sustainable practices, and ensure fair distribution of tourism benefits. These measures are crucial for fostering a tourism model that is environmentally sound, socially just, and culturally respectful.
