Censorship in School Education

Eckhardt Fuchs, Wibke Westermeyer

This chapter aims to trace recent developments in censorship in school education, focusing on the case studies of Brazil, India, Hungary, and the United States collected in this volume. These countries are by no means the only ones where an increase in educational censorship has been observed, as the number of illiberal democracies rises. After a short introduction to the term “censorship,” the chapter will outline various types of formal and informal censorship in school education, before focusing on two of them: textbook revision and book bans. The text concludes with some pointers for strategies to fight censorship in the classroom.
