Celina
Olivier Sterck, Madison Bakewell, Raphael Bradenbrink, Alexander BettsAbstract
This chapter tells the story of Celina, a South Sudanese widow whose household sits at the twentieth percentile of the Kakuma income distribution. After her husband was killed and the family’s cattle were stolen by a rival community, she had no other choice but to flee South Sudan. She arrived in Kalobeyei in 2017 with her six children. Like many women in Kakuma, Celina never attended school and cannot access work, leaving her fully reliant on humanitarian assistance. Her story highlights the particular vulnerabilities of female-headed households as well as problems associated with debt, inflation, and insecurity.
