Cataract Symptoms and Vision-related Quality of Life among Patients with Cataract

Abstract

Background:

A correlational study was conducted on cataract symptoms and vision-related quality of life among patients attending the ophthalmology outpatient department of a selected eye hospital in Karnataka.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess cataract symptoms and vision-related quality of life among patients with cataract, and to examine the correlation between cataract symptoms and vision-related quality of life and associate them with selected demographic variables.

Methods:

A descriptive correlational research design was used for this study. The sample comprised 60 cataract patients selected through convenience sampling. The data were collected using a socio-demographic profile, a checklist of cataract symptoms and a vision-related quality-of-life scale.

Results:

There was a statistically significant association between cataract symptoms and their selected demographic variables, such as gender and vision-related quality of life and age. A statistically significant correlation was observed between cataract symptoms and quality of life.

Conclusion:

Cataracts can significantly impact a person’s daily life, so it is advisable to seek treatment as soon as possible to prevent vision loss. Implementing structured care and enhancing patient education programs is essential to improving the quality of life for patients with cataracts.
