Carbon-based land management – how to implement the task of decarbonization of agricultural landscapes
Elena Cherkashina, Alla Khutorova, Ruslana ZhdanovaAt the current stage, the issue of the climate agenda on carbon neutrality is becoming increasingly relevant. The country's agro-industrial complex should become a source of technologies that ensure the sequestration of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. The implementation of carbon farming, which includes minimal soil tillage, the use of cover crops, the exclusion of bare fallow, mulching and composting of the field surface, the rejection of agrochemicals, the organization of buffer zones, the selection of hybrid plant species, as well as the design of forestry, cultural, technical, and other measures, should be carried out through land management. The article provides a definition of carbon land management and proposes a structure for the decarbonization of agricultural landscapes in the country's agro-industrial complex through land management measures. The article discusses the strategy for the socio-economic development of the Russian Federation with low greenhouse gas emissions until 2050, analyzes and statistics indicators and factors affecting climate change, and presents a set of measures for the country's economic sectors, including agriculture. The article also analyzes greenhouse gas emissions in agricultural production and the changes in soil carbon content depending on the use of various agricultural practices. The article provides an example of calculating CO2 sequestration and its cost using a pilot project of intra-farm land management in an agricultural organization in the Belgorod region. The article examines the individual components of the intra-farm land management project from the perspective of carbon sequestration measures. The scientific study addresses the challenges of decarbonization in agricultural landscapes and provides suggestions for their resolution, including the structure of decarbonization in agricultural landscapes within the country's agro-industrial complex through inter-farm and intra-farm land management.
