Building Culturally Relevant Leadership: Integrating Multicultural Self-Efficacy, Distributed Leadership, and Improvement Science

Maria Lawson-Davenport

Abstract

This chapter explores the intersection of multicultural self-efficacy, distributed leadership, and improvement science, emphasizing their combined significance in developing transformative school leadership in urban settings. It introduces the Cultural Leadership for Urban School Improvement Model (CLUSIM) as a framework that prepares school leaders to address the complexities of increasingly diverse student populations and the systemic inequities that influence their experiences. By bridging theory with practical application, the chapter illustrates how multicultural self-efficacy, cultural proficiency, collaborative leadership practices, and data-informed improvement processes work together to strengthen school climate and instructional capacity. Through case studies and applied examples, it demonstrates how CLUSIM equips leadership preparation programs and school systems with the necessary skills to foster inclusivity, collaboration, and evidence-based improvement.
