Bright People Know More About Wine

General intelligence ( g ) is a robust predictor of success across numerous life domains, including academic achievement and occupational performance. However, these domains often involve strong external incentives or are linked to socio-economic status (SES). Drawing on Jensen (1998), the present study investigated whether the predictive power of IQ extends to specialized knowledge lacking such incentives, using wine knowledge as a test case. We hypothesized that higher IQ would be associated with greater wine knowledge, even controlling for wine-related occupations and wine drinking behavior. Data were collected from N = 525 participants who completed a standardized assessment of wine knowledge adapted from an internationally recognized wine test as well as a brief measure of general intelligence (ICAR). As predicted, ability significantly predicted wine knowledge (β = 0.31, p < .001). This association survived controlling for occupational exposure, which served as an incremental predictor. A significant IQ × wine experience interaction emerged (β = 0.14, p = .005), indicating that the positive effect of intelligence on wine knowledge was amplified by professional domain exposure. While personal wine consumption also predicted knowledge, this did not significantly interact with IQ. These findings support conceptualizations of g as a general capacity for knowledge acquisition operating independently of extrinsic motivation, while also interacting with specific rewards (such as work-related needs) amplifying crystallized knowledge in these regimes. The results demonstrate that g predicts the depth and density of specialized knowledge acquisition and suggest the use of such microcosms to understand why g drives general knowledge and how knowledge accumulation is fostered by work requirements versus interest-driven exposures.
