Briefing: Exploring cultural heritage preservation of indigenous ethnicities of Southeast Guizhou

This paper delves into the vital role of cultural preservation in alleviating poverty, fostering the inclusion of indigenous groups, and promoting cultural tourism through grassroots efforts. It highlights how intangible heritage can serve as a key asset for local development, intertwining authenticity and sustainability. Based on field visits to five distinct locations in Guizhou Province, China, this study explores how different communities apply unique approaches to preserving their cultural heritage. Although the methods may vary, the overarching theme remains the same: preserving local cultural heritage through the active participation of indigenous communities. This exploration was part of a workshop titled ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage Preservation for Cultural Administration and Sustainable Tourism’ organised by the Central Academy of Culture and Tourism Administration (Party School of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Communist Party of China) in May 2025.
