Bridging Cultures in Urban Education: Reflection of a Teacher’s Cross-Continental Experience

Olayinka Bolaji

Abstract

In this chapter, I reflect on my cross-continental teaching journey from Nigeria to the United Kingdom and now Canada to explore how culturally responsive pedagogy and reimagined classroom practices can advance equity and inclusion in urban education. Drawing from my lived experiences as a teacher and researcher, I situate personal narratives within broader educational discourse to show how reflective practice can inform transformative teaching in diverse urban classrooms. I discuss insights gained from working in educational systems to describe strategies such as inclusive student engagement, culturally responsive curriculum design, and reframing teacher expectations to support diverse learners. By connecting practice to research, I illustrate how educators can cultivate learning environments grounded in empathy, belonging, and social justice. I conclude by highlighting practical implications for educators and school leaders seeking to foster equitable, culturally responsive, and relationship-centred learning environments.
