Blockchain-enabled digital platforms for responsible business: building trust and traceability in global supply chains

Global supply chains are increasingly expected to operate in an ethical, transparent, and sustainable manner. However, information asymmetry, unreliable reporting, and poor visibility still pose a challenge in many existing digital infrastructures over the sourcing networks. This paper examines the application of blockchain-supported digital platforms within the enhancement of responsible-business practices through the integration of trusted, traceable and verifiable data streams into supply-chain operations. Based on the main features of blockchain technologies immutability, decentralization, concurrent validation and programmable smart contracts, the paper proceeds to develop end-to-end system of accountability utilizing emerging technologies in food safety, ethical sourcing of minerals, and sustainable apparel. It has been found that blockchain decreases the threat of sustainability scam, enhances environmental and social governance (ESG), and confidence among stakeholders. Yet challenges remain. Some blockchain designs utilize too much energy, lack of interoperability, and lack of consistent regulations prevent large-scale implementation. To overcome these anxieties, we introduce the concept of Blockchain-Enabled Responsible-Business Supply-Chain (BERB-SC), converging digital responsibility and responsible governance. Responsible digital ecosystems are the last research points of the paper focusing on blockchain governance, cross-industry standardization and integrating AI and IoT.
