Bismuth electron buffering stabilizes alkaline hydrogen evolution under intermittent operation

A bismuth overlayer reversibly buffers oxidative charge to protect NiCo cathodes. It suppresses metal dissolution and sustains alkaline hydrogen evolution during startup–shutdown and reverse-current cycling under industrially relevant conditions.
