Biological Indicators in Central Sterile Supply Department: The Final Checkpoint for Sterilization Safety

Surabhi Mohanty

Abstract

The central sterile supply department (CSSD) plays a pivotal role in infection prevention and patient safety within healthcare institutions. Effective sterilization of surgical instruments and medical devices is essential to prevent healthcare-associated infections. Among sterilization monitoring methods, biological indicators (BIs) are considered the gold standard because they directly evaluate microbial destruction during sterilization cycles. This article discusses the importance of BIs in CSSD through a practical case-based observation of sterilization failure despite acceptable mechanical and chemical parameters. The report emphasizes the role of biological monitoring in quality assurance, patient safety, root-cause analysis, and compliance with accreditation standards such as those of the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers. Routine implementation of biological monitoring significantly strengthens sterilization reliability and infection control practices in healthcare settings.
