Bilateral Posterior Medial Meniscus Root Tear in a Septuagenarian Patient, Difference Between Repair Versus Non-Repair Approaches: Case Report
L.H.D.C. Araújo, M.J.C. Bezerra, J.B.S. Nogueira, R.B. HolandaObjectives:
To describe the treatment of a bilateral lesion of medial meniscus posterior root in a septuagenary patient, comparing the results of the repair versus the non-repair approaches.
Methods:
In the non-repair approach, the treatment consisted of partial meniscectomy and synovectomy, followed by conservative measures. In the repair approach, the meniscus was repaired with sutures and tibial pullout fixation.
Results:
In a timeframe of five years, the non-repaired evolved with progressive functional compromise and rapid progression of osteoarthritis, from grade I to grade IV and led to total knee arthroplasty. Otherwise, the repaired knee, showed better functional result and slowest degeneration progression, evolving from grade II to grade III in a four-years period
Conclusion:
Whenever possible, the medial meniscus posterior root repair is preferable, even in older patients and in the presence of degenerative changes.
