Bilateral optic neuritis in a pediatric patient with Scrub typhus: Insight into an uncommon neuro-ophthalmic presentation
Suchismita Mishra, Prantik Rakshit, Pradeep Kumar Panigrahi, Anuspandana MahapatraA 6-year-old male child presented with a sudden onset, painless loss of vision bilaterally following a fever of 15 days’ duration. Other than sluggishly reacting pupils, the anterior and posterior segment examinations were normal. Laboratory tests confirmed Scrub typhus (ST). The patient was diagnosed with bilateral optic neuritis and treated with systemic antibiotics and corticosteroids. There was prompt improvement in vision following initiation of treatment. Optic neuritis complicating ST is extremely rare. ST should be considered in the differential diagnosis of optic neuritis in areas endemic for rickettsial diseases.
