Background
Pituitary adenomas (PAs) comprise most of the tumors that originate from the sellar region. The last 2 decades have witnessed remarkable progress in the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms of PAs and the design of appropriate treatment strategies. We conducted a bibliometric analysis to review the global trends and status of research on PAs.
Methods
We searched the Web of Science Core Collection for PA‐related articles and reviews published between 1 January 2000 and 28 February 2025. Bibliometric analyses were performed using VOSviewer and CiteSpace to examine research institutions, countries and regions, journals, and references. The study included 15,418 publications.
Results
The United States contributed the largest number of publications, followed by China. Harvard University was the leading research institute in the PA field. Pituitary and Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism were the leading journals in terms of publication output and citation counts. Cluster analysis revealed six major keyword categories: (1) molecular mechanisms of PAs; (2) somatotropinomas and acromegaly; (3) prolactinomas and hyperprolactinemia; (4) corticotropinomas and Cushing's syndrome; (5) surgical treatments for PAs; and (6) radiotherapy.
Conclusion
This bibliometric analysis mapped global publication patterns and major research themes in PA research from 2000 to February 2025. The increasing prominence of artificial intelligence‐related research identifies an emerging direction whose clinical value requires further validation.
