Beyond Words: Voicing Lament through Nonverbal Expressions in Lamentations

Megan Fullerton Strollo

The book of Lamentations is accented with sounds that penetrate the poetry, providing an auditory track for lament and protest. Nonverbal expressions of groaning, sighing, and screaming add to the emotional depth and give readers a fully embodied experience. This contextual and intertextual study places emphasis on the emotional effect of Lamentations for readers in the ancient world and today.
