Beyond the body mass index

Rebekah Roll, Jennifer K. Readlynn, Catherine Glatz

Abstract

Body Mass Index (BMI) is one of the most recognized measures across healthcare and beyond. However, the medical world, alongside anti‐weight stigma advocates, has started a slow, but steady deconstruction of its use as a marker of individual health. This article explores the limitations of the BMI and its relationship with systemic anti‐fatness while offering practical steps to optimize our care of patients of every size.
