Beyond the Bite: Unravelling the Biochemistry of Rabies — Stronger Together for a Rabies-Free World

Komal, Abhishek Kumar

Imagine a disease that can be transmitted through a single bite, silently travels through the nervous system, and becomes almost invariably fatal once clinical symptoms appear. Yet, with the right preventive measures and timely medical intervention, deaths from this disease can be prevented. This is the reality of rabies, one of the world's deadliest zoonotic diseases. Observed annually on 28 September, World Rabies Day raises awareness about rabies prevention, animal vaccination, public health preparedness and the importance of coordinated action. The theme for 2026, “Stronger Together,” delivers a powerful message: rabies cannot be eliminated by doctors, veterinarians, governments or communities working independently. It requires all of them to work together.
