Carolyn Maile, Sophie Steed, Allen O’Connor, Philomene Uwamaliya, Jemima Kempton, Christopher Wagstaff

Using Rolfe’s reflective framework, this commentary explores the academic assessor role in mental health nursing education, highlighting variation in preparation, expectations and practice. It considers how system pressures and compressed assessment processes can limit meaningful evaluation, and argues for clearer roles, stronger academic–practice collaboration and a more developmental approach to assessment.
