Beyond Dichotomies: The Case for Q as an Inherently Hybrid Mixed Methodology

Debates about whether Q methodology (Q) represents mixed methods research often arise from differing assumptions about what “mixing” entails. Some scholars associate mixed methods with integrating separate qualitative and quantitative data strands, while others emphasize methodological integration within a single analytic process. Q was designed to study subjectivity through the systematic ranking of statements and by-person factor analysis to describe the multiple viewpoints on a topic. Consequently, Q has been described both as a mixed method and as something beyond mixed methods, captured in the term
