Beyond Constraint: Expanding Masculinities Through Vulnerability and Communal Healing

Abstract

This chapter describes the importance of supporting the student success needs of Men of Color through a focus on masculinities. The Black Men Reflection Group is presented as a best practice that centers an exploration of masculine gender identities through dialog and vulnerability. The participants’ narratives are framed through the Loving Systems framework to offer insight into participant experiences. Recommendations for practice are offered for how institutions of higher education can utilize a communal approach centered in care, stability, commitment, and capacity.
