Between Longing and Enactment: Reimagining the Erotic Transference and Countertransference
Peggy VermeeschAbstract
This paper explores erotic transference–countertransference, drawing on classical Jungian and psychoanalytic developmental perspectives. Using the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode The Perfect Mate as a modern myth and vehicle for symbolic amplification, the dynamics of an eroticized trauma complex are examined as they manifest within the analytic relationship. Such patients may withdraw libido from the outer world, directing their erotic longings toward the analyst, where the repetition compulsion can be symbolically enacted and the inner Other encountered through archetypal projection.
The analyst’s response plays a central role in determining whether these energies lead to retraumatization or symbolic transformation. When the erotic transference is met with attuned and ethically contained engagement, a transitional space opens in which shared affective experience can be tolerated and metabolized. Particular attention is given to the nigredo states of emotional deadness and primal erotic desire that follow the coniunctio , especially in patients with histories of sexual abuse. I argue that the healing potential of the erotic transference lies neither in gratifying nor refusing desire, but in the shared capacity of patient and analyst to endure the numinous depth of the erotic connection and the grief that this love can never be lived out concretely.
