Benefit Sharing from Maasai Manyatta Visits
Magio E. Obombo, Louwman-Vogels CharlotteSummary
Cultural Manyatta, a tourist attraction in Dagurugurueti village, was designed as a way of sharing tourism revenue with the Maasai community. Through in-depth interviews with local leaders and local communities, this case study presents the benefit-sharing experiences of local communities from the cultural Manyatta visits. The local communities indicate that there are concerns relating to limited funds and unequal revenue distribution from cultural Manyatta visits entrance fees paid by tourists. They point to the need for benefit-sharing mechanisms that create a large and equitable share of tourism revenues for all stakeholders.
