Barriers and the Invisible Hurdles

Kevin Logan

Abstract

The silent cry for help is often a voice that is faint and hesitant, particularly for Black males in community colleges. Stigmas tied to their identity and cultural challenges that arise before they even arrive on campus contribute to the difficulties they face. This chapter explores the unique challenges confronting Black male students, highlighting barriers created by traditional educational structures and the lack of culturally responsive approaches. It underscores how eurocentric curricula and teacher-centered methods fail to meet the need for autonomy, competence, and relatedness creating gaps in connecting, communicating, and discovering. Emphasizing self-determination, the chapter illustrates how intrinsic motivation, and tailored support can empower Black males. It also discusses the role of mentoring and coaching, as well as alternative learning environments that align with the cultural and social contexts. Overall, it calls for a reimagining of higher education to create inclusive and equitable spaces for Black male students.
