Autolocalization of conduction electrons in crystalline neon
K. B. TolpygoThe possibility of autolocalization of a conduction electron in crystalline neon is considered, and the energy of its interaction with a quasi-uniform deformation in the crystal is estimated. It turns out that due to the negative value of the electron affinity energy, it is lattice extension and not compression that is advantageous, and the energy minimum is attained when a cavity of radius R ≃5.5 Å is formed. Then the localization energy is about 0.415 eV, and the barrier to be overcome is about 0.023 eV.
