BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder is increasing worldwide; however, knowledge about it among health providers is still inadequate. OBJECTIVE: The study aims to assess the knowledge of the pediatricians (residents and specialists) regarding autism spectrum disorder. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study design was conducted during December 2024. A total of 49 resident and specialist doctors (in pediatric specialty) who were working and/or studying at Children Welfare Hospital in Baghdad during the time period of the study were included. The participants completed the Knowledge about Childhood Autism among Healthcare Workers (KCAHW) questionnaire and some demographic questions during their activity meetings. RESULTS: The total KCAHW score was 16 ± 4 (median ± IQR), with domain II having the highest score, while domain IV had the lowest score. 51% of the participants showed a higher level of knowledge. An association was found between the gender of the doctors and the level of knowledge, with a p-value equal to 0.01. CONCLUSION: There is a lack of knowledge of autism among pediatricians; more training about ASD is needed.
