Augustine, Carl Rogers and Orthodox Psychotherapy: Connections and Differentiations
Constantinos AthanasopoulosThe paper examines key positions in three distinct approaches to psychotherapy based on the theological work of Augustine, the psychiatric work of Carl Rogers, and one of the key relevant Orthodox Christian views within “Orthodox Psychotherapy”. Connections are discussed, and certain key differentiations are highlighted, with the hope for the development of a more nuanced discourse between the three related fields of Psychiatry, Psychology and Orthodox Psychotherapy. I conclude that Orthodox Psychotherapy, even though distinct and different in its approach, can be less polemical and more open for a dialogue between the three approaches, becoming more effective in its therapeutic approach.
