Audio Sensation
S P MackenzieAbstract
This chapter discusses the acoustic environment aboard various types of combat aircraft due to high engine noise and explores aircrew reactions thereto. It examines the sounds, words, and emotions associated with electronic communication by flyers between or within wartime aeroplanes. It chronicles reactions to exterior noises generated by everything from the breaking off of accumulated ice to shrapnel from shells striking airframes and guns being fired. It describes the sonic effects of, and responses to, collisions and crashes. It discusses the acoustics associated with enemy attacks from the air whilst flyers were on the ground. It alludes to occasionally positive as well as predominantly negative aural experiences among pilots and other flyers.
