Association between Visual Deficits with Cognitive Decline and Dual Sensory Loss

Tannu Thakran, Animesh Mondal, Sourav Karmakar, Amarbir Singh, Partha Chowdhury

This systematic review consolidates the evidence on visual deficits, cognitive decline, and dual sensory loss in older adults. A PRISMA 2020-compliant systematic review was conducted to identify, screen, and synthesize relevant material using Google Scholar, PubMed, ResearchGate, ScienceDirect, Scopus, MEDLINE, Embase, Semantic Scholar, and OVID. The literature was searched and selected using the keywords Cognitive decline, dual sensory loss, and vision impairment according to predefined inclusion criteria. Study design, features, assessment techniques, and major findings were selected from the research. Due to study heterogeneity, the narrative synthesis of 21 primary research studies found a strong link between cognitive decline and visual impairment. Dual sensory loss accelerated cognitive decline more than hearing or vision. Vision and dual sensory loss affect older people yet are overlooked. Starting early screening, awareness, assistive equipment, and visual art therapy in health care can slow this progression.
