Assessment of Test Anxiety among Adolescent Students at High Schools in Erbil Governorate, Kurdistan, Iraq

Background:
Test-taking has always been a part of every student’s life, from the time of young elementary students throughout their whole school life till the time they toss their graduation caps.
Objectives:
The objective of the study is to investigate the level of test anxiety (TA) among high school students in Erbil Governorate, Kurdistan, Iraq.
Materials and Methods:
A cross-sectional study design with convenience sampling was conducted among 1000 students in 20 high schools in Erbil Governorate (Hawler, Shaqlawa, and Soran) from November 2021 to May 2023. The data collection period started from January 2022 to March 2023.
Results:
The results show that out of 1000 participants, 69.3% were aged in the middle adolescent stage, 67.9% of them were female students, 89.8% of students were from governmental schools, 76.2% of students were from a scientific branch, 42.4% of students were grade 12 students and more than half of students (55.8%) were in Hawler city and most of them (62.5%) live economically in medium level. Regarding the level of TA, 31.4% of students had moderately high TA, there is no significant association between age, class, and economic level with TA, whereas there was a significant association between school type, sex, department, residency, and failed years with TA.
Conclusion:
The study concluded that most of the students had moderately high TA and school type, sex, department, residency, and failed years were influential factors, which affected the level of anxiety.
