Assessment of osteoporosis knowledge, self-efficacy, and related factors among nurses and physical therapists in a physical medicine and rehabilitation hospital
Zafer Ceyhan Aims: This study aimed to evaluate osteoporosis knowledge levels and self-efficacy perceptions among rehabilitation nurses and physical therapists working in a physical medicine and rehabilitation hospital and to examine the associated factors. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study included all healthcare professionals working in the institution (62 rehabilitation nurses and 38 physical therapists; n=100). Data were collected between October and November 2025 using a structured questionnaire administered face-to-face. The questionnaire included sociodemographic characteristics, the revised osteoporosis knowledge test (OKT) (2011), and the Osteoporosis Self-Efficacy Scale (OSES). Statistical analyses were performed using appropriate parametric and non-parametric tests. Correlation analyses were conducted to examine relationships between variables. Results: The median age of participants was 43 years (26-58), and 84% were female. The mean osteoporosis knowledge score was 20.0±3.4, and the mean total self-efficacy score was 816.3±200.6. Physical therapists reported significantly higher perceived self-efficacy than nurses (p=0.037). Participants who exercised regularly had significantly higher knowledge and self-efficacy scores (p≤0.005). Those who had received prior osteoporosis-related education demonstrated significantly higher knowledge (p=0.015) and perceived self-efficacy scores (p=0.005). A moderate positive correlation was found between knowledge and perceived self-efficacy (r=0.342, p=0.001).Conclusion: Rehabilitation nurses and physical therapists demonstrated moderate osteoporosis knowledge levels. Knowledge was positively associated with self-efficacy. Education and regular exercise were linked to higher knowledge and confidence levels. Structured in-service training programs may enhance both knowledge and self-efficacy in preventive osteoporosis care.
