Nuhu Abdullahi, Ishaku Isaac Yari Mallo, Oyelayo Abike AdekiyaThe study aimed at assessing the livelihood of peri-urban communities in Kaduna MetropolisNigeria. The study sampled four peri-urban communities in Kaduna metropolis. The selectedcommunities include Nassarawa, Hayin na Iya/Malalin Gabas, Hayin Dan Bushiya and DownQuarters. The study employed interview and focus group discussion in obtaining the data. Thestudy used 25 respondents from each of the four study areas making a total of 100 respondents(representing 30.3%) as the sample size. Purposive and simple random sampling were used inselecting for both interview and FGD. The respondents were contacted at different times forboth interview and focus group discussion. The data was analyzed by the use of descriptivestatistics, frequencies, percentages for interview method while narrative analysis and verbatimquotations were used for FGD and Kruskal Wallis test was used for interview method. This isbecause in the interview method numbers of respondents were used during the interview withthe respondent. The findings revealed that the peri-urban communities engaged in differenteconomic activities such as tailoring, driving, mechanic work, KekeNapep riding, landspeculation, building, civil service, trading, vulcanization among others for their livelihood. The study also discovered the duration of the peri urban communities which differ from oneanother, but those that spent above thirty years have the highest number in the four study areasconstituting 52%. However, the peri-urban communities have different sources of water, butwater from the well is the main source of water in the four peri-urban communities. However, using KruskalWallis test it is revealed that there is no significant difference in the sources ofwater in the four peri-urban communities in Kaduna metropolis. Most of our Peri – urbancommunities suffer from inadequate and quality water supply, hence adequate sources andgood quality water supply should be provided to such areas. Recommendably Authorities likeministry of environment, Kaduna State Urban Development Authority (KASUPDA) andKaduna State Geographical Information Service (KADGIS) should provide an avenue forboosting micro – economic activities in our Peri – urban areas. Where Peri – urban settlementsstay for along time, social and infrastructural facilities should be provided to them.
