Artificial Lighting Design Criteria for Residences
Elif KaplanResidences are living spaces where a significant part of human life takes place and where individuals carry out their daily activities. In these living spaces, it is important to create spatial designs and physical environmental conditions that positively affect people's mood and productivity during the day, and their rest and sleep at the end of the day. Proper planning of physical environmental conditions such as acoustics, thermal conditions, lighting, and colour increases people's comfort levels, thereby contributing to improved mood and increased efficiency and productivity. Lighting is a powerful factor that has visual, biological, and psychological effects on people. This study evaluates the fundamental principles and criteria that should be considered in the design of artificial lighting in residences. Lighting requirements across different residential functions are assessed to propose arrangements enhancing users' visual comfort and quality of life. The study aims to contribute to the creation of qualified lighting designs in residences that take into account both user requirements and the function of the space. In lighting designs developed with new technologies today, achieving energy efficiency, using smart lighting systems, and adopting a human-centric lighting approach will contribute to enhancing users' visual comfort and improving living conditions.
