Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Beyond: The Future of Medical Tourism

Understanding how these technologies influence patient care, trust, and decision-making has become essential for delivering faster, safer, and more personalized services. While existing research highlights AI’s and robotics’ contributions to diagnostic accuracy and surgical precision, limited studies examine their combined impact within medical tourism. Challenges such as regulatory variations, ethical concerns, and digital inequities further complicate their adoption across countries. This study adopts a mixed-methods approach, using secondary data to assess global trends, ethical implications, and technological preparedness for AI-enabled medical tourism. Focus group interviews were conducted to explore international patients’ expectations, experiences, and behavioral responses to AI- and robotics-driven healthcare services. The qualitative data underwent thematic analysis, revealing four dominant themes: robotics enhances precision and recovery; emotional and economic concerns hinder AI acceptance; AI aids decision-making; and trust in technology is conditional and contextual. The findings underline AI’s role in improving diagnostic precision and the value of robotics in enabling faster recovery outcomes. The study also identifies technologically advanced medical tourism destinations – including India, Thailand, and South Korea – that benefit from strong infrastructure, strategic investments, and supportive regulatory environments. Overall, this chapter provides a roadmap for integrating AI and robotics into medical tourism by highlighting emerging opportunities as well as practical challenges. It emphasizes the need for ethical, patient-centered, and globally competitive approaches to harness the full potential of these technologies in transforming healthcare experiences.
