Artificial Intelligence in Music Creation

Rubén Carrillo, Luis del Barrio, Patricia A González-Moreno

Abstract

This chapter explores the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in music composition, with a specific focus on its pedagogical implications. It aims to critically analyze the advantages and limitations of AI tools in fostering creativity, as well as to understand their influence on educational practices in higher music education. Drawing on a thorough review of contemporary literature and interviews with university professors specializing in composition and music production, the chapter presents diverse perspectives on the challenges and opportunities AI introduces in both creative and academic contexts. Key findings reveal that while AI can serve as an innovative resource for artistic exploration and personalized learning, significant concerns remain regarding ethical and legal issues such as authorship, copyright, and equitable access. Educators express the need for professional development and curricular innovation to effectively integrate AI without compromising fundamental creative skills. Resistance to change among professors and the risk of overdependence on AI tools also emerge as critical challenges. By providing a comprehensive analysis of AI's role in music teaching and creation, the chapter aims to inform ongoing discussions, support the development of responsible educational policies and future practices, and highlight the need for interdisciplinary research to advance the ethical, pedagogical, and equitable-access dimensions of the field. Ultimately, it advocates for balanced, conscious use of AI to enhance composition teaching, ensuring the preservation of human creativity alongside technological innovation.
