Artificial intelligence implementation framework for precision CNC manufacturing cluster of MSME units

Parameswari Krishnan, S. Veni

The demand for precision manufacturing continues to grow, driven by advancements in Aerospace, automotive, medical devices, and electronics. However, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) often face capital constraints and underutilized infrastructure. Facility-sharing—specifically for Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines—offers a strategic solution to address high equipment costs, excess capacity, and production variability. This article consolidates existing literature, technologies, platforms, and case studies on CNC facility-sharing, and proposes and validates an AI-enabled facility-sharing framework, highlighting its benefits, limitations, and research gaps. This article analyses the challenges and opportunities in precision manufacturing facilities by considering these units as a closed cluster of different units spread over any particular industrial hub. A framework for shared CNC infrastructure supported by digital platforms and cluster-based cooperation is proposed.
