Art awards as learning ecosystems: Sustaining artist growth through the Art Futures Awards initiative

Janet Fong, Cissie Fu, Jimmy Lee, Gloria Mak

The Art Futures Awards (AFA) initiative is an Asia-based award programme for early career artists that combines recognition with structured post-award support. Whereas research on art awards often emphasizes prestige, funding and symbolic validation, this article examines how awards may also operate as learning ecosystems during the transition from art school to professional practice. Drawing on survey responses from AFA finalists and awardees, together with interviews and case studies from the inaugural 2023 cohort, the study analyses how residencies, mentorship, peer exchange, workshops and international exposure shape artists’ creative development, professional confidence and career sustainability. Findings suggest that sustained engagement after the award supports creative experimentation, network formation and self-positioning, while also mitigating the isolation commonly experienced by emerging artists. Situated within debates on art education, communities of practice and extra-institutional learning, the article argues that post-award programmes can become important infrastructures for artist development in Asia and beyond.
