Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Career Guidance and Counseling
Maria do Céu Taveira, Ana Daniela SilvaAbstract: The technological evolution has renewed interest in vocational psychology in how digital tools, including artificial intelligence (AI), can be ethically and effectively integrated into guidance and counseling practice. This systematic literature review, conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, explores the current state of the art in applying AI to career guidance and counseling. Three keywords, two databases, and three eligibility criteria were defined. Of 50 identified articles, 27 met the inclusion criteria and were reviewed. The findings highlight the applications of AI, the underlying theoretical frameworks, its effectiveness, and the ethical issues, as well as implications for research and professional practice. Overall, the evidence portrays a transformative yet still maturing field in which AI enhances engagement and decision-making in career development. However, its responsible integration ultimately depends on empirical rigor, ethical grounding, and a sustained commitment to human-centered values.
