Anthologies and Shaping of Native American Literary History, 1833–2024: A Bibliography
Amy GoreABSTRACT
Indigenous literary scholarship contends with outside misperceptions of the field as lacking a significant number of texts. Moreover, despite the ubiquity of survey courses and introductory courses to Native American literature in college classrooms, the major academic publishing houses of anthologies—Norton, Heath, Broadview, Bedford, and others—have yet to produce a comprehensive anthology of Native American literature that surveys precolonial to contemporary literatures across tribal nations. The following bibliography emphasizes the abundance of Indigenous literary history in contradiction to the stubborn falsehoods of Indigenous deficiency. It ameliorates the current absence of a comprehensive Indigenous anthology by listing existing thematic anthologies so as to make them more easily searchable and to assist instructors and readers alike with access to a variety of compilations. With that goal of accessibility in mind, this bibliography lists not only all Indigenous literary anthologies published in English from tribal nations living within the United States, Canada, and Mexico but also all reprints of every such anthology. Thus, the following bibliography offers a resource for accessing the rich abundance of Indigenous literary history, examining the development of Indigenous anthologies over time, and compiling data relating to their recirculation.
