“And the women came:” a review of African Feminist Praxis: Cartographies of liberatory worldmaking by Jessica Horn

Tšhegofatšo Ndabane

This review examines African Feminist Praxis: Cartographies of Liberatory Worldmaking by Jessica Horn (2024), exploring African feminists’ organizing work across the continent. The book uncovers this worldmaking praxis through five key pillars: kinship, courage, care, pleasure, and memory. Through what Horn describes as “an interplay between research and remembering,” and positioning herself as “a teller among many,” each pillar is presented as both an analytic frame and a lived practice. Thus mapping how African feminists have long generated new ways to imagine, enact, sustain, and transmit liberations across generations. The review argues that the book offers an important, generative intervention into the erasure of African feminist praxis, and serves as a critical reorientation toward these voices and makings of liberation as wholly sufficient unto themselves.
