Anarchy, the South, and Christian Witness

Mikael N. Broadway

The journal Katallagete entered into a chaotic era in society, church, and theology in the United States, offering an alternative to doctrinaire liberal and conservative social thought, with contributors who represent a complex mix of Civil Rights Movement veterans, literary figures, clergy, theologians, and radical activists. Some of the writers identify as Christian anarchists, and almost all of them offer a radical critique of the dominant theological and political visions of race, the state, and the churches during the era of its publication. Although the journal was published for only two and one-half decades, this essay seeks to place its social critical perspective into the context of a longer radical and anarchist theological tradition.
