Analysis of the behavior of the building structure in the area of discontinuous mining deformations

Marian Łupieżowiec

Abstract

Currently, construction projects are implemented in areas with very difficult or complex ground conditions. These include areas characterized by discontinuous deformations resulting from shallow mining exploitation. Discontinuous deformations can be caused by specific ground features that expose fractures in rock layers. A key aspect of the design process is a proper understanding of ground conditions. In addition to standard surveys, geophysical surveys supplemented by drilling at the locations of the detected anomalies are necessary. This enables the development of a ground treatment program that limits the effects of potential future deformations on planned buildings and infrastructure. Even with the correct characterization of the subsoil and implementation of deep protection measures, a proper analysis of the structural behavior remains essential. This enables the absorption of the anticipated impacts and ensures that both the ultimate and serviceability limits are satisfied. This requires an advanced analysis of the soil-structure interaction that correctly defines possible ground deformations. The type of deformation may be significant in the structural work. In particular, attention should be paid to satisfying the serviceability limit state conditions, which can be decisive for the facility functionality. In industrial facilities, rectification is necessary to enable expected operations.
