Analysis of Research Trends in the Journal of Wound Management and Research Using Keyword-Based Topic Modeling

Hye-Eun Seok, Seok Woo Lee, Hyonsurk Kim

Background: As the Journal of Wound Management and Research (JWMR) gained prestige in South Korea with a steady increase of submissions and publications, and the field of wound management itself became increasingly multidisciplinary, previous methods of reviewing and meta-analysis displayed limitations in their ability to capture broader structural trends in wound-related research publications. The purpose of this study was to systematically identify wound management research topics by applying topic modeling to keywords from articles published in JWMR, and to examine temporal changes in these topics to elucidate past research trends and future research directions. Methods: English keywords from JWMR articles were collected and preprocessed. Latent Dirichlet Allocation–based topic modeling was applied, and annual topic distributions were analyzed to investigate the structural characteristics and temporal changes of research topics. Results: The number of articles published in JWMR showed a marked increase after 2018. Topic modeling identified four major research topics: complex wound reconstruction, pressure ulcer management, diabetic foot reconstruction, and advanced wound therapies. These findings indicate that wound care research has developed into a multilayered field integrating both clinical and technological approaches. Conclusion: Keyword-based analysis of JWMR revealed the structural evolution of wound management research and a shift toward technology-centered approaches.
