Analysing the Use of AI Tools in Scholarly Writing Among Islamic Finance and Other Academic Disciplines: A Case Study from the College of Islamic Studies, HBKU

The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education varies significantly across disciplines, influenced by factors such as technological advancements, institutional readiness, and educational objectives. AI's integration into higher education is driven by its potential to enhance learning outcomes, streamline administrative processes, and personalize education. However, the extent and manner of AI adoption differ across academic fields, reflecting diverse needs and challenges. This study explores the emerging role of AI tools in scholarly writing within the context of the College of Islamic Studies (CIS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU). Through a comprehensive survey distributed among students and faculty, we assessed the frequency, purpose, and perceptions surrounding AI tool usage. Our findings reveal a marked increase in the adoption of AI tools, particularly for tasks such as grammar correction, citation management, idea generation, and paraphrasing. While many respondents acknowledged the efficiency and support these tools offer, significant ethical and methodological concerns were also raised. This chapter situates the CIS case within a global context, offering comparative insights, identifying policy gaps, and proposing recommendations to foster responsible AI integration into academic practices.
