ABSTRACT

The recognition of novel bacteria continues to expand with the decreased cost and rapid adoption of whole genome sequencing for bacteria. A review of newly identified bacterial species and revisions to bacterial nomenclature from 2025 was performed. New members of families Staphylococcaceae , Streptococcaceae , Actinomycetaceae , Pseudomonadaceae , and Pasteurellaceae were recognized in 2025. While most novel organisms identified in 2025 were isolated from normal microbiota of the skin or gastrointestinal tract of healthy animals, there were some notable new taxa, including Macrococcus psychrotolerans sp. nov., which carries a mecB determinant from Staphylococcus aureus . In addition, Buchananella felis sp. nov., isolated from cases of feline pyothorax, becomes the second member of the genus Buchananella , alongside Buchananella hordeovulneris . Within the gram-negative organisms, a new Pseudomonas species and a novel member of Pasteurellaceae , namely, Rodentibacter abscessus sp. nov. isolated from abscesses in pet hamsters, was recognized. Additions to spiral or curved bacteria included Campylobacter canis sp. nov. and Helicobacter gastrocanis sp. nov. Proposed revisions to seven bacterial taxa are briefly described.
