An Overview of Contemporary Leadership Models

Filiz Küçükalpelli
ABSTRACTThis chapter examines the historical evolution of the leadership concept and explores contemporary leadership models that have emerged in response to globalization, digitalization, ethical management, and sustainability. Modern leadership has transcended traditional paradigms, emphasizing transformational, ethical, authentic, visionary, participative, innovative, and digital leadership approaches. In sports management and recreation contexts, leadership now embodies emotional, cognitive, and social competencies rather than merely managerial authority. A comprehensive literature review reveals that leadership is increasingly defined as a dynamic and interactive process. This study outlines the theoretical framework of modern leadership, analyzes key models, and highlights their implications in sports management practices. Findings indicate that contemporary leadership emphasizes ethical awareness, innovation, collaboration, and vision-driven management.
