An Introduction to Leading and Managing Teams

Abstract

Our goal in this chapter is to set the stage for how to think about leading and managing teams in modern organizations. We start out by stating that people are too manage using a prescribed set of steps or behaviors. We follow that up by illustrating a number of concepts that are likely to seem similarly unsettling to aspiring team leaders:

And if those issues weren’t unsettling enough, we cap the chapter by describing three problematic yet enduring discussions that crop up in many environments for helping aspiring team leaders learn—discussions that might serve as obstacles to their success.
