An Information Dimensional Perspective on LLM-Based Cyber–Social Systems

Recent years have seen explosive growth of both personal and professional use of large language models (LLMs). This article considers the impact of these developments on formal and informal cyber–social systems: the meta-systems created through integrative interactions between (groups of) humans and technological components. The analysis is based on Emergent Information Theory, a theoretical framework encompassing both biological and technological information systems. A qualitative distinction is demonstrated between LLM-based cyber–social systems and those involving other types of information technology such as expert systems and traditional fixed-function software. The article concludes with a discussion of the potential impact of this relatively new type of artificial intelligence on the future of cyber–social systems.
