An Examination of U.S Political Systems That Proliferate Agricultural Water Contamination

Arjun Krishna

The goal of this project will be to analyze empirical trends regarding the financial strategies of chemical manufacturers (e.g., Syngenta (Chem China), Bayer Crop Science) and their impacts on the environment and people. This project further analyzes international examples to examine the unique effect of American political polarization on agricultural runoff policy. Through analysis of the most recent literature, this research studies the effects of high-level spending and lobbying, including links to the health and safety of undocumented migrant workers and members of rural agrarian communities. This project juxtaposes the systems and methods utilized by these companies to subvert basic health and safety measures in light of polarization that has allowed chemical contamination to become a subject of political debate. Ultimately, the project identifies how chemical companies expend resources to push forward deregulation and how these practices are unique to America. The paper discovers that the US governmental system provides avenues for chemical companies to avoid responsibility and advance their agenda, which tangibly affects ecosystems and sources of clean water.
