An Aristotelian Puzzle About Time

Abstract

The objective of this paper is modest yet significant. We aim to explore how, within the Aristotelian framework, a body at rest can be considered temporal given that time is ontologically derived from change. Aristotle’s translators employ the term “in time” to categorize at-rest bodies as temporal, but the precise interpretation of this expression is far from straightforward. We contend that the commonly favored interpretation, which we refer to as the celestial solution, is inadequate and warrants reconsideration. This analysis facilitates a deeper understanding of the intricate relationship between time and substance, leading us to advocate for what we believe is a more fitting solution.
